AI Sends Them to Your Homepage. Your Homepage Loses Them.

60% of ChatGPT referrals now land on brand homepages, up from about a quarter. Getting found by AI is half the job. Here's what your homepage has to do next.

Since ChatGPT's May 2026 update, roughly 60% of its referral traffic lands on brand homepages, up from about a quarter, per Similarweb. AI engines don't send people to your carefully built landing pages. They send them to your front door. Which means your homepage just became the most important sales conversation your firm has, and it's happening without you in the room.

The May 7 shift nobody's website was built for

On May 7, 2026, ChatGPT started putting brand links front and center in its answers instead of burying them in footnotes. The result, measured by Similarweb across its clickstream panel: total ChatGPT referrals jumped 157% week over week, and traffic landing directly on homepages went up 354%. Before the update, homepages took about a quarter of ChatGPT's referral clicks. Now they take roughly 60%, and that share has held. This is the new baseline, not a spike.

Last week we covered how to become the name AI gives. This is the sequel, and it's less comfortable: getting named is half the job. The click goes to your homepage. What happens in the next ten seconds is the other half.

Think about what a decade of marketing practice assumed. You built campaign specific landing pages. You A/B tested them. The homepage was a lobby, a place people passed through on the way to the pages that did the selling.

The AI referral economy inverts that. The engine makes the introduction ("here are three firms worth looking at") and drops the person on your root domain. No campaign context. No pre qualified funnel. Just a human with high intent and a browser tab, deciding whether the AI's recommendation holds up.

The visitor who arrives already warm

Here's what makes this traffic different, and why losing it hurts more than losing a cold click.

Someone who lands on your homepage from a ChatGPT answer has already told a machine their problem in full sentences. "My father needs memory care near Worcester." "We need a CPA who understands dental practices." The AI shortlisted you specifically. This person isn't browsing. They're verifying.

A verifier's questions are brutally simple:

  • Is this who the AI said it was?
  • Do they handle my situation?
  • Do people like me trust them?
  • What do I do next?

If your homepage answers those four questions fast, the AI referral converts like the warm introduction it is. If it opens with a vague slogan, a rotating carousel, and a wall of services in no particular order, the verifier hits the back button and checks the next name on the list. The AI gave you the introduction. The homepage gave it away.

The audit most homepages fail

Pull up your homepage and grade it honestly against the verifier's four questions.

Is this who the AI said it was? The first screen should say what you do, for whom, in plain words. Not "Excellence in every relationship." A parent verifying a school or a founder verifying an accountant should see their own situation reflected in the first five seconds. If your headline could hang in any firm's lobby in any industry, it fails.

Do they handle my situation? Verifiers scan for their scenario by name. The homepage needs visible, specific paths: who you serve, what problems you take on, named services with real descriptions a click away.

Do people like me trust them? Reviews, client results, credentials, recognizable local signals. Not a logos strip for its own sake; evidence. High stakes buyers read trust proof carefully, because they're about to hand you their money, their health, or their kid.

What do I do next? One obvious action, visible without scrolling and repeated on the way down. Book the call. If your primary conversion path takes three clicks to find, most verifiers never find it.

None of that is exotic. That's the sting: most homepages fail on fundamentals, not sophistication. They were written as brochures for people who already knew the firm, back when the homepage was a lobby. Now it's the pitch.

Found and chosen are different jobs

Here's the trap we watch businesses walk into: they invest in AI visibility, the citations start coming, traffic ticks up, and nothing else changes. No more booked calls. The conclusion they draw is "AI traffic doesn't convert." The real story is that their homepage was never built to receive it.

Getting found and getting chosen are different jobs. One is done by your structure, your schema, your reviews, your answers to the questions buyers ask machines. The other is done by your website in the ten seconds after the click. Doing the first without the second is paying for introductions you're not equipped to close, and the machines will keep making those introductions either way. The 60% number doesn't care whether your front door is ready.

That's why we treat them as one system: AEO earns the click, web design and development converts it, and both get measured monthly so you know which half is working and which half needs the next fix.

Found and chosen are two of three doors. See how the whole system fits together, from AI answer to booked call.

Frequently asked questions

Where does AI referral traffic actually land?

Mostly your homepage. Since ChatGPT's May 7, 2026 update, roughly 60% of its referral clicks land on brand root domains, up from about a quarter before the update, per Similarweb clickstream data. Campaign landing pages rarely see this traffic, which is why homepage quality now directly determines what AI referrals are worth.

Is traffic from ChatGPT worth anything?

It's high intent by nature: the visitor described their problem in detail and the AI recommended you specifically, so they arrive verifying rather than browsing. What that's worth in booked calls depends almost entirely on whether your homepage answers who you are, who you serve, why you're trusted, and what to do next. We report AI referral traffic and conversion behavior separately each month rather than promising revenue multiples.

What should a homepage do differently now?

Answer a verifier in seconds: a first screen that says what you do and for whom in plain language, visible paths to the situations you handle, real trust evidence (reviews, results, credentials), and one unmissable next step. Structure it so machines can read it too; the same clarity serves both audiences.

Do I still need landing pages?

For paid campaigns and specific offers, yes. But AI engines don't respect your funnel design; they link the front door. Build the homepage as your primary receiving page first, then let landing pages do their narrower jobs.

Deveney is an absolute expert in her field. There is no one who understands comprehensive branding or the user journey like she does. I have worked with Dev on multiple photoshoots and have watched many of her projects come to fruition. She is exceptionally professional and a complete visionary, creatively. She is able to execute your vision perfectly, while making it exceedingly more beautiful, creative, and engaging.

I would say that Deveney's greatest strength is in her strategy and execution. She listens and does a ton of research in order to create the ideal plan, whether it's for design, brand, or video project. Her execution is then expertly done. She is communicative and shares each step of the process with you to make sure the vision is aligned.
