What Is AEO? Why Your Next Client Asks ChatGPT Before They Call Anyone

45% of consumers now ask AI to find local businesses, up from 6% a year ago. AEO is how your firm becomes the answer that AI gives.

AEO (answer engine optimization) is how your business becomes the answer when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI who to trust. A year ago, 6% of consumers asked AI to find a local business. Today it's 45%, per BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey. If the machines don't know you, you're not in the conversation, and you'll never know which clients you lost.

The referral you never saw

Picture the person about to become your best client this year. A parent choosing a school for their kid. A couple who just sold a business and needs a wealth advisor. A practice manager who needs a new accountant before tax season gets ugly.

Ten years ago they asked a friend. Five years ago they Googled and clicked through a page of blue links. Now, close to half of them open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's AI and type the actual question: "Who is the best fee only financial advisor near Boston?" "What independent schools should we look at in the Northeast?"

The AI answers with three or four names. The person checks those names out and calls the one that feels right.

Here's the part that should stop you: that answer gets generated whether or not you're in it. There's no page two. If the AI doesn't say your name, the conversation happened without you, and no report in your inbox will ever tell you it happened at all.

That shift has a name. Answer engine optimization, AEO. It's the work of making sure that when the machines get asked, you're the answer they give.

AEO is not SEO with a new sticker

SEO got you ranked in a list. AEO gets you named in an answer. Related, not the same.

Traditional SEO optimizes for a results page where the searcher does the choosing. They scan ten links, click two or three, compare. Visibility was a spectrum: position four still got traffic.

An AI answer is not a spectrum. The engine synthesizes everything it can read about your market and commits to a handful of names. It's acting less like a phone book and more like a well connected friend: it recommends, it doesn't list. And like any friend making a recommendation, it only names businesses it actually knows things about.

So the inputs are different:

  • Can the machines read you? Your site needs structure the engines parse cleanly: schema markup, clear headings, pages that answer real questions in plain language. A beautiful site that's illegible to a crawler is a brochure in a locked drawer.
  • Do third parties vouch for you? AI answers lean heavily on independent signals: reviews, directory listings, press, anything that corroborates your claims from outside your own website. The engines are skeptical of what you say about yourself and generous with what others say about you.
  • Do you answer the actual questions? People ask AI full questions, not keywords. The businesses that get cited are the ones whose content answers those questions directly, near the top, without making the reader (human or machine) dig for it.

Why this matters most in high trust categories

If you sell something people can't afford to get wrong (their money, their health, their kids' education), the AI shift hits you twice.

First, your buyers are exactly the people using AI this way. They're doing serious research for a high stakes decision, and asking an AI to shortlist candidates is now a normal first step.

Second, the engines are cautious in these categories. When the question involves money or health, AI systems lean harder on authoritative, well structured, third party corroborated sources. Which means the gap between "visible to AI" and "invisible to AI" is wider for a wealth advisor or a medical practice than for a pizza place. Getting the fundamentals right buys you more here than almost anywhere else.

The uncomfortable flip side: your twenty years of reputation live in referrals, handshakes, and a filing cabinet of thank you notes. The machines can't read any of that. A newer competitor with a structured site and sixty recent Google reviews can outrank your two decades of actual trust in an AI answer. Not because they're better. Because they're legible.

What AEO work actually looks like

No magic, no secret handshake with OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. (No one can pay to be in the answer, and anyone selling guaranteed placement is selling smoke.) The work is unglamorous and it compounds:

  1. Audit. Measure your current AI visibility: what the engines say when asked the questions your buyers actually ask, and what your site looks like to a crawler.
  2. Fix the plumbing. Schema, page structure, question shaped content, clean technical foundations, so every engine that checks you can read you.
  3. Build the trust file. Reviews, listings, consistent business information everywhere your name appears, third party mentions. The evidence AI quotes.
  4. Track and repeat. Run your buyers' real questions through the engines monthly. Watch which answers you enter, which you're still missing, and fix accordingly.

Months, not days. AI answers move on the timescale of crawls and retraining, not overnight. Anyone promising a 30 day miracle is describing something other than this work.

Getting found is the first of three doors. See how get found, get chosen, and get seen work together as one system.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your website, content, and third party presence so AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can find you, understand what you do, and recommend you when people ask for businesses like yours. It matters because 45% of consumers now use AI to find local businesses, up from 6% a year ago, per BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO optimizes for ranked lists on a search results page, where the searcher compares options. AEO optimizes for being one of the few names an AI includes in a synthesized answer. They share fundamentals (good structure, real authority), but AEO leans much harder on question shaped content, schema, and third party trust signals.

Why doesn't ChatGPT know my business?

Usually some mix of: your site isn't structured in a way machines parse confidently, your content doesn't answer the questions people actually ask, and there aren't enough independent signals (reviews, listings, mentions) corroborating who you are. Reputation the machines can't read might as well not exist, and most established firms have exactly that problem.

How long does AEO take to work?

Expect meaningful movement in months, not days. AI engines update what they know on crawl and retraining cycles, and trust signals like reviews accumulate over time. That's why we measure monthly and report exactly what moved, and why we don't sell 30 day results.

Deveney is an absolute expert in her field. There is no one who understands comprehensive branding or the user journey like she does. I have worked with Dev on multiple photoshoots and have watched many of her projects come to fruition. She is exceptionally professional and a complete visionary, creatively. She is able to execute your vision perfectly, while making it exceedingly more beautiful, creative, and engaging.

I would say that Deveney's greatest strength is in her strategy and execution. She listens and does a ton of research in order to create the ideal plan, whether it's for design, brand, or video project. Her execution is then expertly done. She is communicative and shares each step of the process with you to make sure the vision is aligned.
